To make the cake, I used 2 boxes of red velvet cake that I baked in a bundt cake mold shaped like a bundle of grapes. I actually made 2 cakes in that pan. I dug out the inside of one of the cakes once it had cooled. I filled the cavity with strawberry jelly. Then I frosted the bottom of the other cake and put them together. I mixed red food coloring with cream cheese frosting to reach the color I wanted. I warmed the frosting until it was pourable and poured it over the top of the cake. I let the cake set overnight in the fridge.
The next morning, I mixed 2 sandwich baggies of icing and food coloring; one red and one blue. I cut the tip of one corner of each bag and piped the veins and arteries. I then mixed corn syrup and 1 cup dark corn syrup, 2 tablespoons cornstarch, strawberry ice cream syrup and as much food coloring as necessary to reach the red color I was looking for to make liquid blood and poured the mixture over the cake. I also filled 2 syringes with the blood mixture for props.
If I do say so myself, it came out AWESOME!
My coworkers brought some awesome foods too! Here they are:
