If you feel like you’ve blown it at some point in your life and let the Lord down, He calls you back.
How many times have you started a diet, blown it and thrown in the towel? Your relationship with God cannot be treated the same way you treat a diet. If you think you have blown it, the Lord calls you back. There is nothing you can do that would make your relationship with Our Savior irreparable.
Peter, denied Jesus 3 times at the time of the crucifixion, and therefore believes himself to have been a failure to the Lord. He was so despondent at his failure that he has decided to return to his trade of fishing. Peter spends the night out fishing on the Sea of Galilea with the other disciples without having caught any fish.
Jesus reveals himself on the shores of Galilea and tells Peter to cast his nets off the right side of the boat. They pulled in 153 fish. Jesus asks Peter 3x’s if he loves Him? This is when Jesus reaffirms the calling to Peter to follow Him and become the foundation of the Church.
We also took the opportunity to thank our priests for listening to the calling of their lives and we pray for the reaffirmation of their calling during this pilgrimage.
We spent the majority of the day in Capernum. This was Peter’s hometown and the starting place of the Christian Church. In Mark 1:21-29 “Jesus entered the Synagogue and taught. He taught them with authority… He left the synagogue and went into the house of Simon.”
The excavated city helps you to realize the proximity of Simon Peter’s house to the Synagogue and the way this town facilitated the birth of the Church. Peter’s humiliation at denying Jesus caused him to feel like he was failure in his faith and to his Lord. This is an example to all of us of God’s mercy. Just because you’ve blown it doesn’t mean that you are dismissed from the responsibility of the calling of your life. If you have struggled with inadequacies, addictions, etc. – you can renew your life and reflect on the initial calling for your life. Our Lord is so gracious and loving. Capernum helps you return to the reflection of you life. Our Lord never turns His back on us. Maybe you have been denying the Lord in your life. You can always come back to the calling of your life.
We visited a museum that houses a 2,000+ year old boat that was discovered in the 1980s. The lengths they went to preserve this boat are incredibly impressive!
We finished the day by taking a sunset boat ride in the Sea of Galilea. The boats were modeled after ancient fishing boats from the time of Jesus. The views back to the cities surrounding the Sea of Galilea was beautiful! I was very cold though and had a hard time staring focused on the positive because we had no seats and I was not dressed warmly enough. My fault completely!
