Today is the start of the Lenten Season and it feels like a personal call from the Lord to come home. Today’s reading is the perfect invitation for our Lenten journeys:
“Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning; rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the Lord, your God.”
Christ teaches us that there are 3 ways to return to Him during Lent; prayer, fasting, and alms giving. It is not just the sacrifice of giving something up, it is also adding a significant amount of prayer and a significant amount of giving.
My sister started a text thread last night with our family asking what everyone planned to give up during Lent. Instead of giving anything up, I plan on giving throughout Lent.
I will give my heart and mind to God, by spending more time in study and prayer. I will ask the Holy Spirit to guide me and teach me how to pray better. I will fast so that my sacrifice will give me an opportunity to quiet my own desires and listen to God’s call. I will spend time in prayer with my husband daily to strengthen our marriage in the Love of God. I will give to those in need, be that monetarily or with my time and love.
I am ready to enter this season of hope and turn to Lord in reflection of my sinfulness and examination of my conscience. He is ready to welcome us back into His loving arms.
