Today’s Reading: Jonah 4:1-11
Jonah was angry at God for not answering his prayers. Have you ever been angry at God? Have you ever felt let down because your prayers were not answered… or not in the way you wanted.
We beg and plead with God. We expect answers. We expect them in our time frame. But, He works in His own time. And His response is not always what we want.
God responds to Jonah “Have you reason to be angry?” And really, when we step back and look at our lives, do we have a good reason to be angry? We may face struggles that feel insurmountable, but God always carries us through. He helps us survive whatever burden we are facing. He gives us the strength to carry on.
“I have reason to be angry,” Jonah answered, “angry enough to die.”
Then the LORD said,
“You are concerned over the plant which cost you no labor
and which you did not raise;
it came up in one night and in one night it perished.
And should I not be concerned over Nineveh, the great city,
in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons
who cannot distinguish their right hand from their left,
not to mention the many cattle?”
In the second part of this reading God points out that His concerns are for the good of the whole – that while Jonah may want vengeance on the people of Nineveh, that God cares for them, even if they don’t understand His love. God cares for us, even when we feel alone, He is there.
